Message from the President

Welcome to Matsuyama University.

Matsuyama University got its start as the Matsuyama Higher School of Commerce in 1923, with just sixty students. Thereafter, the school transitioned into the Matsuyama Keizai Senmon Gakkō (Matsuyama College of Economics) and then the Matsuyama Shōka Daigaku (Matsuyama University of Commerce) before changing its name to Matsuyama University in 1989. With the addition of the new Faculty of Informatics added in 2025, we are now a comprehensive university with six undergraduate faculties covering seven departments, as well as six graduate school courses, and a student population of around six thousand. In addition, over our century of existence, we have some eighty-four thousand alumni, who play key roles in the front lines of industry, education, government administration, and many other fields.

Since our establishment a hundred years ago, Matsuyama University has proclaimed “Truthful,” “Useful,” and “Faithful” as its founding principles, emphasizing practical education. “Truthful” is the attitude of not being satisfied with existing knowledge and continuously learning and mastering things in pursuit of the truth. “Useful” is the attitude of not just studying knowledge as information but rather engaging in learning while constantly bearing in mind realistic issues in order to harness this knowledge in one’s own life and work. And “Faithful” is the attitude of facing others sincerely and humbly, with the desire to respect and share each other’s views. These are, in short, a call to continually update one’s knowledge to match the changing times, to connect this learning to realistic problem-solving, and to value interpersonal relationships. And they remain the foundation for education at Matsuyama University.

In 2023, when Matsuyama University celebrated our centennial, we created the slogan “Minore, MIRAI (Seize the future).” This is a declaration of our stance of providing enriched learning and campus experiences so that each and every one of our students can grow towards the future, bear their own fruit. And, at the same time, it is also a declaration that we will bring about a fruitful future for the local community. In today’s society, with the rapid development of information technology and AI, complex problems are emerging into the light of day. The Shikoku region, where many of our alumni live, is also facing a range of issues as its population declines. With all this going on, Matsuyama University aims to create opportunities for our students to change the knowledge they have learned into practical skills, and create outcomes through solving the region’s problems, as we tackle issues this area faces hand in hand with our students, and as part of our connection to our home.

Matsuyama University will continue to create a fruitful future together with our local community, and with our students, based on the spirit of “Truthful,” “Useful,” and “Faithful.” I ask that all our students build up their abilities to create new value by deepening their knowledge and connecting it to practice. And I also ask our community to continue working with us and supporting us as partners as we engage with regional issues.

Let us take a step towards forging our future, hand in hand with Matsuyama University.

Masato IKEGAMI, President of Matsuyama University
